School Substitute Teacher License
 
The School Substitute Teacher License authorizes the holder to serve in an instructional capacity and provide support in a District of Columbia Public, Private or Charter School. Eligible applicants may be issued a "regular" or "limited term" license based upon their educational preparation and other qualifications.
 
There are two types of substitute license currently available:
 
Regular sub-applicant has a conferred bachelor’s degree earned at a regionally accredited institution of higher education. This license holder may provide services for as many days during the academic year as needed.
 
Limited term sub-applicant has completed the equivalent of 60 semester credit hours earned at a regionally accredited institution of higher education. This license holder may provide services for up to ninety (90) days per academic year.
 
Both the limited term and full substitute licenses are valid for a period of two years.
 
To obtain a DC substitute license you will need to submit the following:
  • Substitute application (e.g. F-6 form);
  • Non-refundable application processing fee ($30) payable by cashier’s check or money order ONLY; and,
  • Official transcripts showing completion of at conferred bachelor’s degree or at least 60 semester credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.
