Initial Teacher License
The Initial Teacher License authorizes the holder to serve in an instructional capacity in a District of Columbia Public, Private or Charter School. Eligible applicants may be issued a ‘provisional’ or ‘standard’ level license based upon their educational preparation and other qualifications.
General requirements for issuance of a full teaching license in any subject
area are demonstrated by official documents verifying successful completion of the following:
- A conferred bachelor’s degree earned at an accredited college or university; and,
- Completion of a state approved licensure program in a teaching area matching the subject area of the DC license being sought completed at an accredited college or university; and,
- Passing scores for all portions of the Praxis I Pre Professional Skills Test and all applicable portions of the Praxis II Subject Assessments required by the District of Columbia, administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS).
License seekers who completed their education program at an institution located in DC must contact the Certification Officer in the School of Education at the institution where they completed their program to obtain an application for licensure.
