Commission on Food and Nutrition
The Commission was established in 2005 to advise the Mayor and the Council of the District of Columbia on the policy, nature and extend of feeding and nutrition programs in the District. The Commission has several functions included but not limited to reviewing and advising on the best practices in nutrition and nutrition-feeding program across the United States to assist in establishing benchmarking processes, performance goals and baseline data; recommending standards, or revisions to existing standards to be applied to the delivery of nutrition and nutrition-feeding services; identifying gags in funding and services, or methods of expanding services, including methods to improve food access and nutrition for District residents; and undertaking other duties that advance the Commission’s purposes, as assigned by the Mayor or his designee.
The Commission is comprised of twenty-one voting members appointed by the Mayor. These appointed members include representatives from various DC government agencies; experts in nutrition and nutrition feeding programs; non-profit institutions and organizations; community representatives and other educational programs and institutions. The terms are appointed up to three years and are at the pleasure of the Mayor. The meetings are scheduled every other month; a quorum must be met to continue the meting and are open to the public. However, only appointed members may vote on projects/decisions. There is not compensation for being a member.
